The Rabat Salé Tram project is the result of a long reflection, born from multiple previous studies, including that of Transroute (transport plan in 1976), and research carried out in 1982.
Subsequently, the city authorities discussed in 2003 the feasibility of public transport lines in own site (TCSP) in the urban area of Rabat Salé.
For this, and based on design studies conducted in 2005 and 2006, the Agency for the Development of the Valley BOUREGREG was mandated and responsible for implementing the Tramway project in partnership with the Municipalities of Rabat Salé. In February 2007, His Majesty King Mohammed VI launched the construction of two tram lines for the agglomeration, defining the main principles of the first phase until commissioning in early 2011. The exploitation for The first 20 km of the Tramway network was entrusted to TRANSDEV, a private operator, a professional in the business under contract, signed on May 20, 2010.
TRANSDEV is the 5th largest public transport operator in Europe and the European leader in mass transit, with operations in more than 13 countries. The application of TRANSDEV was selected following an international call for tenders, according to precise qualitative and quantitative objectives and this, for a period of 6 years.
The new operator has set up a subsidiary in Morocco, which creates 300 new jobs. Thus, qualified personnel are trained to operate and maintain the network. TRANSDEV began to intervene as early as June 2010 in the preparation phase of commissioning.
