The Ministry of Communications is one of the major ministries of the KRG. The ministry is responsible for the administration and management of all areas of communications. With the formation of the first KRG cabinet and under the provisions of Law number (2) of 1993, enacted by the Kurdistan National Assembly, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications was established. Despite the imposition of two harsh economic sanctions on Kurdistan region, the international sanction and the Iraqi government’s blockade, and the lack of any existing infrastructures in these areas, they united all the skills to implement new projects in both areas of transportation and communications in Kurdistan. These attempts reflected positively on the economy and the provision of services to the public. The followings are few of the important projects of the Ministry. Opening airports in Kurdistan; provision of mobile services by the private sector firms backed by the Ministry, Provision of internet service is also been assisted by the Ministry, installation of tens of telephone exchanges, installation of lighting cables, connecting telephone lines with the surrounding and European countries and provision of wireless telephone lines. To better administer the services in these areas, the fifth KRG cabinet divided the Ministry of Transportation and Communications into two separate ministries, the Ministry of Communications and the Ministry of Transportation. The Ministry of Communications continues to implement important projects in accordance with the scientific standards in the area of communications. Now the communications system in Kurdistan is among the most advanced systems in the region.
