Since first opening our doors in 1967, we’ve been fortunate to work on design projects of many types and sizes. Our offerings and expertise have evolved and expanded over the years, but the core of our philosophy remains the same: focus on the success of our clients.
After a few years of working for other firms in Nashville, Tennessee, Batey Gresham and Flem Smith’s acquaintance grew into a friendship after a chance meeting at a local AIA-sponsored event. Batey, who had recently ventured out on his own, and Flem, who had envisioned starting his own firm since earning his architecture degree, soon drafted a partnership agreement. In April 1967, Gresham and Smith Architects was born.
The two accepted their first commission in 1967 for an academic building and dormitories at a Nashville military academy. Soon after, Gresham and Smith Architects was fortunate to become a primary architect for the newly formed Healthcare Corporation of America (HCA). The relationship — one that continues today — was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that helped successfully position us as a leader in innovative hospital and healthcare facility design.
